What Is Contemporary Art?
This free online course from the University of London explores the ideas, techniques, and concepts behind contemporary art—art that has been created since the 19th century, or since the turn of the 20th century. The course explores the artist and/or viewer’s guide to some of the key ideas and concepts in the field of art history, including: object, form, medium, technology, form of representation, social context, and intellectual life. The course also explores the various artists and movements that developed from their experiences in the field of art, including: artists, innovators, critics, practitioners, and critics; artists, writers, musicians, and artists, and artists, and critics. The course is aimed at those of you interested in learning more about art and history, as well as those of you interested in exploring the themes, inspirations, and concepts relating to art, in order to enrich your life and art practice.

As art is defined by the process of making—and by the process of learning—it is also the process of creation. This course examines the entire process of taking an idea, developing it into a work of art, and putting that artwork into words. We will look at everything from the initial sketches and initial drawings to the final painting that ultimately ends up in the hands of an artist. The course will focus not only on the artist’s guide to how an artist creates a work of art, but also their process of thinking and making.

This is a beginner-friendly course! If you are new to the subject, start with the discussion of the basic elements of art and how they are made. Then move on to the elements of art that are important to an artist: form, medium, technology, and content. Finally, we will discuss the elements that are most important to an artist: content, technology, and form. We will look at the whole process of art creation, including the elements and qualities of content that an artist needs to create his or her art.Introduction to Art & Art
